If you're thinking of submitting some artwork for CA's annual exhibition at Penshurst Place, there's only a week or so before the selection day on Thursday 9th November. This is a great opportunity to have your work seen by lots of people in a busy cafe - many of whom are looking for good ideas for Christmas presents! Everyone is invited to the launch evening at 6 pm on the 15th November - come and have a glass of wine and some nibbles while browsing the paintings, drawings and art photographs on display. See our Visual Arts page for details of submissions.

A Heads Up for 3rd November ...If you're thinking of booking for the evening of music and monologues featuring guitar/percussion duo Against the Grain, plus popular local performers, do it soon! There are only a handful of tickets left. Don't miss this unique evening - more details here!
What started out as a modest winter-themed exhibition is now a full-on seasonal display of the work generated by Crowborough Arts visual artists. This year, for the first time, we're going to have a section devoted to the work generated during our Art in the Garden initiative, that has been running over the last season at Penshurst Place. Don't miss the opportunity to submit your pictures - the exhibition opens on Wednesday 15th November with a launch party in the Porcupine Pantry. Click here for full details of submissions. In our continuing quest to explore and support the arts in our area, we've put together an evening which we think you'll find exciting and entertaining! Book now as space is limited, and Support the Arts in Crowborough! Click here for tickets. Against the Grain Classically trained percussionist Jo May and guitarist Matt Sullivan will dazzle you with their stunning musical skills and exciting performances. Stirring the styles of West Africa, South America and Spain, Jo and Matt create an original blend of musical flavours to whet your appetite - from jazz tunes with spoons to original masterpieces on balafon, Cajun and flamenco guitar. Against the Grain enthral audiences everywhere including main stage gigs at Towersey, Broadstairs and Sidmouth festivals and, now, of course, Crowborough! Face to Face Many Crowborough Arts members know Gaye Jee as an organiser of events and producer of publicity materials and our newsletter. She has been producing fiction and drama for many years, and has written a series of monologues on the theme of transformation specially for this evening. Featuring popular performers from previous events, these short pieces range from the comedic to the chilling. A 'Heads-up': It's that time of year again when we're starting to think about our annual exhibition at Penshurst Place's Porcupine Pantry. This year, thanks to the success of our 'Art in the Garden' initiative, we've decided to devote part of the exhibition to work produced over the summer in Penshurst Place's wonderful formal gardens. We'll be asking for submissions to arrive with us before 10th November and the exhibition will open with a private view on Wednesday 15th November.
The Pantry is quite a compact space, but we can usually fit in 35 - 40 pieces of work (without anyone having to be exhibited next to the sign for the toilets!). We've sold well in previous years, and experience has shown us that smaller, colourful work tends to do best. Whether you're new to Crowborough Arts, or have been a member for years, don't miss this great opportunity! More details will be available soon, but most importantly, please do take part - especially if you've made pictures produced at Penshurst. If you have any questions in the mean time, please get in touch with Angela. Fear not! Now that OS is over for another year, and the organisers are drawing breath before beginning all over again for next year, we've decided to make the web pages even easier to find. When you go to the home page of our website, you'll see that the 'Visual Arts' tab now reads 'Visual Arts & Open Studios'. From there, it's just one click to reach the tab dedicated to OS.
While you're there, please do have a look at our Gallery pages - we've got lots of picture from the Open Studios weekend. If you're not among them, please do send your images to me and I'll put them up asap. Gaye Jee On September 22nd, we're lucky enough to have Bertie Pearce trying out his latest talk - "Creating an Imaginary World" - about the history of stage design - at the Green Lane Music Room. Bertie is both erudite and hilarious and is well known as a speaker and magician (and Punch & Judy Professor!) to many CA members. Don't miss this opportunity to catch him! Sue Petszaft, a founder member of Crowborough Arts, has decided to stand down. Sue has co-ordinated and run our successful Open Studios event since it started, as well as acting as Chair and serving on the Steering Group. Current CA Chair, Angela Vernon Bates," writes: "Sue has worked generously and tirelessly for Crowborough Arts from the beginning and has helped to build it into the successful community multi-arts organisation it now is. "She will be greatly missed by everyone for the huge input and energy that she has put into our events and she has helped widen our horizons to embrace many different activities. "I shall miss her personally. We have worked together from the beginning and in 2015 we shared the job of chairing Crowborough Arts. She has always been a great friend and support and I wish her every success in future ventures. "Thank you Sue, from us all - Crowborough Arts is where it is now because of you!" Mary Harris, who had done so much in promoting CA via her life drawing and portraiture sessions, has had one of her woodcut prints chosen for display by The Royal Society of Marine Artists' annual exhibition at the Mall Gallery. The exhibition takes place between 5th and 14th October 2107. Mary's picture was chosen from over 1300 submitted works, so congratulations are most definitely in order! Mary says, "I have always liked the Mall Gallery as it is 'person sized' and accessible. The picture is based on a visit to Hartland, where the rocks are incredibly rich black and triangular, and fading into a misty horizon. I was staying at Merlyn Chesterman's studio to learn more about woodblock cutting and printing, and I knew straight away that this was my chosen subject. It took three days of hard work to cut the black silhouettes and then a separate block for the coloured sea. |
